Funk Audio 21.0

“As I’ve come to expect from the Funk Audio subwoofers I was impressed with the parts quality and craftsmanship of the FW21.0. Even the packaging was above average. I tried out the FW21.0 in my main HT room for a few weeks and it impressed me with the amount of power it could put into the room from such a compact form. I was able to drive my room quite well and was especially strong with music and concert blu-rays. The measurements all back this up too as the FW21.0 has a big set of balls for such a compact system.”

“ Consider the fact that it also delivers excellent performance in a relatively compact and attractive form factor the $3234 asking price starts to seem reasonable if not a bit of a bargain. And, it is, compared to some of the FW18.0’s direct competitors. Funk audio has developed a product worthy of being included on the short list of high end subwoofers to consider.”

“In closing, the Funk Audio 6.1P Loudspeakers are revealing high quality monitors and an honest value at $2805 – $3605 depending on finish. I my opinion, they are speakers worthy of wider recognition. If you are looking for a resolving monitor capable of producing a wide cinematic field of sound and bass output on par with a floor stander, put the 6.1 on your short list of speakers to audition. “I have to again with Ryan on the Funk 18.2 that Nathan brought out, that is the sweetest sealed sub that I've ever heard. It's definitely out of my budget at even the sale price of $8500. But let me tell you, if I won't the lotto I'd be on the phone with Nathan to order two of them so fast your head would spin! Those are absolutely the top of the food chain drivers. We had a chance to talk to Nathan a little about them and there design and to say that they are impressive is the understatement of the year. Thanks again to Nathan for bringing that monster sub out because I would have never believed what it could do unless I experienced it first hand.”

“I am sure some of you are thinking, "So how EXACTLY do these 6.1Ps compare to the likes of Salon2, KEF 201/2, etc." Well, I know why most pro reviewers don't even attempt to verbalize. Great speakers sound great. Period. Yes, there are differences, which is expected. There are differences among "identical" pianos, violins, guitars, etc., as well. Subjectively, the 6.1Ps may have more clarity and detail in the midrange and treble. Subjectively. The bottom line is, I would be completely happy with the 6.1P + 18.0 subs and no other speakers.
And that is my impression.”

“Ya, 100% agree. That Funk sub was extremely clean and powerful. Soooo wish we could have given it a proper setup to the room as seat to seat variance was high. Totally a room thing cause when I sat next to Nathan a few times in the NF of that sub, you could tell the FR is very linear. Clean clean clean. Flexed the drywall thoroughly also. If I could hear that sub with an hour of implementation (Nathan literally had no time, just stuck it in an open spot and turned it on) I think I could have said that's the best bass I've ever hear. Two 18s sounded like 4.”

“You will absolutely find no better finish work from any manufacturer than Funk Audio. Cabinetry work is simply spectacular….
Impressions
Funk Audio takes pride in manufacturing speakers that reproduce music with the highest fidelity to the original signal as is possible. The 8.2P’s create clean and clear sound reproduction at any volume level with no listening fatigue. Just clean clear undistorted music. Music you can enjoy and truly loose yourself in.
Imaging and Soundstage
The Funk Audio 8.2P’s soundstage is like being on a bridge on a foggy night; it is very wide, extending well beyond the 8.2P’s and surrounds you. Imaging is very sharp and stable. You can visualize each performer's relationship each other. The soundstage is uncannily realistic. The 8.2P’s convey ambient information extremely well and really put you there. Paired with the Onkyo TX-NR3009 the 8.2P’s imaging remained true at all volumes.
Dynamics and Headroom
The Funk Audio 8.2P’s has more than enough headroom to handle anything thrown at them. They played with the kind of responsive spontaneous that results from careful time alignment and fast transient response. The 8.2P's headroom goes well beyond any listening level desired. The dynamic punch is apparent on Diana Krall Live in Paris, a good example of a concert recorded with dynamics preserved. In I’ve Got You Under my Skin, Diana’s vocals along with the guitar, drums, and European Symphony
Orchestra had room to hit you at their peak levels and the 8.2P’s delivers just the right amount of detail. A nice example of the 8.2P's showing their dynamic transient ability was Fly Me to the Moon, where each of Anthony Wilson’s guitar notes started with a clear transient impact. Luciano Pavarotti’s rendition of the aria Nessun Dorma from Giacomo Puccini's Turandot for male vocal and pitch. Considered to be the most difficult song to master, and Pavarotti’s vocal tone is transparent and pure. With the entire orchestra playing at peak level, there is little doubt that the Funk Audio 8.2P’s can be pushed to the level of a live orchestra. Usher’s Climax at high volume produced no indication of compression or limitation. The Funk Audio 8.2P never gets close to saying, "Enough, that is all there is, no more..."
Overall Listening Experience
Power, but details handled delicately, yet with authority. The Funk Audio 8.2P’s are beautiful speakers to look at too, and my living room took to them very nicely. The chili cherry wood finish matched with the Thomasville furniture, the lamps on which shook occasionally with the 35Hz capability of two 8" midrange drivers. The Funk Audio 8.2P’s have my definite recommendation.”

“Quadzilla’s sound quality is very close to that of my 18.0. At high SPL it seems more tactile. My open floorplan HT doesn’t lend itself to pressurization, but the beast does seem to provide more of a physical sensation than the single 18-incher does. I tweaked the AllDSP settings in the 18.0 yesterday and the measured response with both subs is a slight improvement over the chart above, but nothing significant. (Really, how much better could it get?) Having the 18.0 assist makes a noticeable improvement to the overall SPL output. I’ve lowered the AllDSP Input gains on both subs and the AVR’s subwoofer gain for both subs are set at -10. Even with those low gain settings the combined output provides an SPL that’s about 10 dB hot, which is just where I like it. I had the pleasure of meeting Nathan and Mark at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest last weekend, and also of having them to our home for dinner. They were both sleep deprived from travelling & the hectic show activities, but they were able to stay for a brief music & movie demo with the new sub. I played a selection from the Eagles Blu-ray - “Funk #49”. (It seemed like an appropriate track...) They also sat through the first half hour of Avengers 3D. Although that movie doesn’t go super deep, it still has some great LFE scenes. The new sub wasn’t optimized at that point (I had received it the day before), but it still sounded incredible. Hopefully Nathan & Mark enjoyed hearing Nathan’s creation in it’s new home. I’m certainly enjoying the heck out of it!”

“If I didn't own any speakers right now (instead of 9 sets of speakers), I would be quite happy with just five Funk Audio 6.1P speakers, two Funk Audio 18.0 subwoofers, and no other speakers and subs. These 6.1P's are excellent speakers, and I highly recommend them for anyone who enjoys the sound of high energy dynamic live music, anyone who likes the sound of the Revel Salon2, B&W 802D2, KEF 201/2, Linkwitz Orion 3, and Philharmonic 3, anyone who loves music of all kinds. I am sure some of you are thinking, "So how EXACTLY do these 6.1Ps compare to the likes of Salon2, KEF 201/2, etc." Well, I know why most pro reviewers don't even attempt to verbalize. “my Funk Audio 2.1 mmmmm pro audio with style.”
“Have: two 8.1P's which are now not available.... the good lord only knows why b/c these things are insanely good. and a single 18.0. 3 channel built in Funk amp. I want: dual active 18.0's or dual 18.3's and two 8.2P's with active crossovers. all funk rack amps b/c i like the way they look. why? i like headroom. when a speaker is not inhibited by passive crossovers, you have control over how it is behaving, the manufacturer uses the best parts, and you have the means to dictate its behavior... you have successfully given yourself every edge you need to obtain excellent sound. what i like about funk amps is; they advertise what they can actually do, they are very strong, and never get hot.
the other weekend i DJ'ed a party in a 8000 cu ft room in Gas Town Vancouver with my modest little stereo. and it held up to the point of impressing everyone there and upsetting the neighboring restaurants. I was even told to turn down the bass..... not just the stereo, but the bass was too much. i was even impressed to the point i emailed Nathan half way through the night. i dialed in the system and i was off and running like chop chop... maybe 30 min from getting the crates in the door. in all the experience ive had, i have never had a stereo that has been this easy to set up, dial in, and get rolling. Funk makes it too easy to get amazing sound, not just subs but the whole thing. for me there is just no reason to look for anything else.”

“Finally got my subwoofers today. The anticipation was killing me. They arrived in flawless condition exactly how I had them pictured when I placed my order. Unfortunately I do not have any XLR to RCA cables so I must wait for 2 more days before I can test these babies out. Once I get them completely unboxed and in position I'll take a couple of pictures. My wife refuses to help me so I'm pretty much on my own. A friend is
coming this evening who has graciously offered to help me out. I'm glad I went with piano black, they look pretty sick!!!!! “
“Will do. They are proving more of a challenge than I thought. With my fathoms I basically put them in place turned off the low pass filter, set phase to zero and ran audyssey and the results were pretty great. With the funk audios, I do get significant bass output but I can seem to find that low end extension. At this point my fathoms definitely went lower with the edge in overall output going to the funks. I know there's probably more tweaking I need to do because I can't imagine it should be this close. The AllDSP control is a little complicated for a newb like me. Hard to tell what all the terms mean, kinda wish it came with a manual.”
“The subwoofers look fantastic. There are a few little what look like bubbles on the top of one of them...very minor, maybe .5-1mm diamter (Nathan says it may be dust particles) with some swirls but nothing really to get obsessive about. Sorry the pictures are not up to snuff. I'm not much of a photographer and it was a camera phone. I hope to get these bad boys calibrated and running in harmony with the rest of my setup.”

“I have the 18.3 Funk Audio subwoofer and setup with Audyssey can be challenging. In my situation, I first had to dial down the gain (via AllDSP) as it was set too high for Audyssey and after getting that setting right, Audyssey seemed to set the level too low after calibration. I confirmed with XTZ room analyzer and an SPL Meter and it seemed about 5-7db too low. However, once dialed in, in my room it reaches lower than the JL Audio Fathom F112 I used to own with much more bass detail. The character of the bass is certainly different than any other subwoofer I've owned. I agree, the AllDSP software can be daunting. I would make sure I confirm any setting changes with Nathan first. The software offers some powerful tools to EQ the subwoofer with it's PEQ functionality and other adjustments.”

“Hey Everyone, thought I'd post some pictures of the 18.0 I ordered from Nathan. I put in my order at the end of Dec 2012 and received it in the beginning of April - took about a month longer than originally expected as he's been busy and I asked for a bit of custom work. Anyways, it's a passive 18.0 TSAD18v1 being run by a Behringer 3000DSP. The finish is a black ash stained black colour matched my existing polk speakers with a maple inlay on the top. Oh, and a magnetic grill cover. So far sounds great, had to do some low end boosting but sitting about 15' away in an open basement (4200 cubic feet) it has more than enough punch. With the little testing I've done with my omni mic it can hit 116dB in movies around my sitting position and there would still be room left to turn it up if need be.”

“The 6.1 are awesome. Nathan says they work better in a small room then the 8.2. These 6.1 are crystal clean baby.”
“They were number one to me for music. Vocals were smooth, lifelike, tonally perfect, just plain badass. Both males and females. Diana Krall and Holly Cole both sounded husky as they are yet liquid gold. A perfect 10 would be the person in the room singing and these came very close to that. Instruments were smooth, tight, and accurate. Drums/guitars were just a little light for my liking. This is totally personal preference. On Trilok song all four instruments could clearly be visualized in distinct spaces. Really, really cool !”
“Forgot to talk about sub's. For most of the time we listened to funk audio 18.2 c. Apparently its 8 k. Best sounding sub I have ever heard. It can hit 130 dB's and is tight, tight, tight. Could never afford one but wow.”

“My Funk Audio 15.0 x2 sub arrived in sunny Colorado last Friday. The shipping crate would have made the ancient Egyptians proud. The cardboard crate was lined with plywood and the sub was mummified in layers of foam and cling wrap. The shipping weight was 175 pounds (confirmed by my back). Once the sub was extracted from it's cocoon it was time to admire Nathan's handiwork. The bamboo finish turned out very well and the curves on the 15.0 model are a nice aesthetic touch over the traditional box sub. Nathan ran the wood grain vertically on the vertical surfaces and front to back on the top & bottom at my request. This is not a sub that you'll want to hide behind a planter!”

“After placement, Audyssey setup, and my post-Audyssey tweaks, I played some good LFE-heavy music tracks. I started with Joe Satriani’s Starry Night on SACD Surround. The kick drum and bass guitar had impressive power and just sounded wonderful. The best I’ve ever heard. Tracks from several other albums also put a smile on my face. I then fired up my projector and played some tracks from a few Blu-ray concert videos: Pretenders - Loose in L.A., David Gilmour - Live at the Royal Albert Hall, and AC/DC - Live at Donnington. The low end in every case was palpable. My couch resonated with the kick drums & bass guitars. Bass had a clarity that was noticeably better than what I’m used to hearing.
I shifted to movies, starting with War of the Worlds. The earthquake as the alien craft emerges from the ground and then incinerates everything in it's path was very impressive. The Funk shined with the heavy LFE in Star Trek (2009) whenever the warp drive was engaged, on shuttle craft landings, and the numerous explosions. (Apparently you can hear explosions in the vacuum of space...) The 18.0 puts out significantly higher SPL levels than my other Funk sub at a given gain setting in the receiver. The 18.0 benefits from some boundary gain in the fireplace location. The higher efficiency of the TSAD 18 driver versus the dual LMSR-15’s deserves most of the credit for the higher SPL’s however. I’m able to get powerful low end in my tough room running the 18.0 solo and leaving both of the other subs powered off. The excursion of the TSAD driver seems small even when it’s cranking out high SPL’s so I seriously doubt I will ever over-drive this beast.”

“Here's what I was hoping to achieve going with the Funk Amp: 1. Eliminate the fan noise 2. Put a nicer looking component on the rack vs the QSC (stupid reason for some, but it is my family room!) 3. Gain some space on the rack by eliminating the QSC 5050 and DCX 2496 combo All 3 were achieved, and I've sold the QSC and DCX so I'm happy. As for SQ, impossible for me to say I prefer the sound of one over the other. Pretty much the same in my opinion, except the noise floor (due to the fan noise) is heads and tails better on the Funk amp, so in fact from that perspective, the SQ is considerably better. As for the Integra vs Marantz, honestly can't say I notice much if any difference in SQ. Aud XT32 compared to Aud MultiXT hasn't made any noticeable improvement in my room, which is why I had originally upgraded (numerous posts by individuals commenting on a "huge" improvement when they went to XT32, so I was curious). I didn't listen to music enough on the Marantz to say whether the Integra is an upgrade, but I am looking forward to being able to have Audyssey applied to 2.1 Channel stereo listening, which IIRC the Integra does while the Marantz doesn't.”

“I'm finally getting around to posting a quick review of my 15.3... I got the sub about a year ago, after some supply chain issues Nathan had (amps). Throughout the design and construction phases communication with Nathan was excellent, never had any surprises and I was able to get exactly what I wanted. He even sent me a couple of veneer samples so I could actually see the final finish. After a year of listening, I've had parties, quiet afternoon listening sessions, watched ~100 movies and thoroughly tested the sub. The only thing I can think to do to improve my low-end capabilities, is order another one. Also, after a year with some pretty punishing trials, the sub is sounding better than it did the day I plugged it in (break in period and whatnot). My setup is far from ideal, I live in a condo so my living room, dining room and kitchen are all one big open space. The sub is very capable of pressurizing the room (thanks to Nathan's advice on sizing/placement). I know the sub performs well right down to 10-15 Hz because the dishes rattle... I'm not posting omnimic graphs because I've got a lot of 60Hz noise (I'm working on it). The kitchen fridge and kegerator are the primary culprits at this point. I've also got to get an electrician friend in to take a look at grounding, Nathan helped me work through some serious ground loop issues just after I got the sub. I'm not posting photos because my place is a bit of a mess, but if there are requests I'll clean up and post some. Like everyone else in this thread, I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I highly recommend Nathan and his products to anyone looking for a great sounding setup. Now I'm off to see if Nathan can build me another one...”
